Totally unfair to Dewey. Having read his book How We Think recently, I can tell you there was nothing in there to suggest we was part of the "vast socialist conspiracy" that every right wing nutjob thinks is out their plotting to subvert our righteous individualism. Ridiculous assertions unsupported by intelligent evidence. Being a "socialist" by the way is not a crime last time I checked.

Author responds. Two problems: Dewey's ideology trumped his interest in education. Second, he worked in secret to transform the country in ways that nobody had asked for. For a short take on Dewey, see a little video I just made for YouTube: "John Dewey and the Burden of Ideology."

I appreciate the praise for Montessori, but we don't need to denegrate Dewey or Socialists on the way. I don't even think peaceful, tolerant Maria would have liked that, and we must always ask, WWMD?

But you are missing the point! There is NO difference in the philosphies of the two! They are both constructivist nightmares which dumb down the populace. This is what the Marxists are using now on our kids to absorb them into the world order. Montessori may or may not have been a socialist, but she was at least misguided about direct learning.

Candidly speaking, I still enjoy this article. Dewey was probably a Fabian Socialist. Why deny it? And it is bad. He thought this new world acoming justified his destroying Montessori's reputation and dumbing down the schools. I just revisited some of these ideas in an essay (on web) called "Education as Neurotoxin." Dewey is the neurotoxicologist, of course.

This article shows a poor understanding of Dewey. As a Montessori School owner I would advise people read both. The philosophies are close - the practice is different. Both desired that children become all they were capable of. Neither creates a dumbed down child. I cannot imagine a Montessori grad using straw men and name calling in arguments like this. Repeating the comments and opinions of others is easy. It takes effort to understand. In this case the reading is very, very rewarding.
